Meet the team – John

Get to know our Asset Manager at FleetCo, John Woolcock. John is responsible for overseeing all aspects of our equipment, from rent preparation and mobilisation to operational delivery and off-hire. He plays a critical role in ensuring our equipment is maintained to the highest standards, leveraging regional support from Thiess’s leading maintenance capabilities.

John brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles in heavy diesel mechanics, asset estimation, and operational support across different regions, including South America and North America:

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Mt Barker, South Australia.

What did you want to be when you were a kid?

To be truthful, I wanted to be a Jockey or “The Man from Snowy River,” but at 6’4″ and built for rugby, that dream didn’t last long.

Why did you join Fleetco?

FleetCo gives me the chance to be close to the work front, directly delivering quality service to clients.

What is your favourite travel destination (or story)?

A road trip from Perth to Brisbane, taking the long way around. It was a 6-week journey full of laughter and incredible sights.

What roles were you doing before joining FleetCo?

I’ve been a Heavy Diesel Mechanic, Asset Estimator, Operational Support Lead (South America), and Engineering Manager (Americas).

What’s your greatest career achievement?

One of my proudest achievements was successfully setting up Thiess’ North American business. It was a challenging experience that took everything I had, but the outcome was worth it. My family and I even relocated to Salt Lake City to make it happen.

Why do you enjoy working in the mining industry?

The mining industry is fast-paced, full of opportunities, and, of course, it pays well. 😉

What do you do away from work to relax?

I’m a dirt bike enthusiast. Some people relax with yoga or a walk—I prefer to hit the track and trails, taking the stress out on the throttle and brake levers.

Which 3 people would you invite to a dinner party?

Clive Palmer, Gina Rinehart, and Twiggy Forrest. In the context of mining, these are the three I’d choose.
